Reducing Imports and Increasing Food Security
Fish is an important source of protein for millions of Nigerians, and fish farming has grown from a few entrepreneurs around Lagos to a major national industry. Catfish grown in ponds or caged fish farms are now competing with imports. In 2007, the last year reliable data is available, Nigeria produced more than 615,000 Metric Tons (MT) of fish and imported just under 740,000 MT. MARKETS opportunity is to replace imports with Nigerian grown catfish.
Increasing domestic catfish production requires attention to the complete value chain. Our goal is to lower costs of production and increase efficiency, making Nigerian catfish more competitive. Because fish feed accounts for up to 70% of the cost of production, and quality of feed determines fish weight, supporting a competitive fish farming industry begins with feed.
